Up-close and Personal
Barry grew up in his great-grandmothers (now, his fathers) home in Jamir Lane. It is a Middle-Class Bengali para of Kolkata. He and his brothers, mixed freely with their neighbours, playing everything from cricket and football to marbles and gilli-danda on the street. As a result, Barry speaks Bengali fluently. Having studied Hindi as his second language in school, Barry speaks, reads and writes Hindi. His mother-tongue being English, Barry is a true tri-lingual Indian!
Barry is very proud of his alumni: St Xaviers Collegiate School, Calcutta; St Columbas School, New Delhi; La Martiniere for Boys, Calcutta; and Jadavpur University.
As a sports journalist in the mid 1980s, Barry enjoyed the on-the-move life skills education he received while being part of an incredibly talented team of journalists and writers in Sportsworld and ABP. But, following in his parents (Neil and Joyce O'Brien) and grandfathers (Dr Amos Peter O'Brien) footsteps, he too became a teacher. Then, having closely watched his parents working for the welfare of the Anglo-Indian community over the last 30 years, he decided to serve the Community as well.
Barrys wife, Denise, heads Admin/Finance in HRPL and is an active social worker. She works at the grass-root level for the welfare of the Anglo-Indian community, besides being involved in other meaningful social service projects. They have three daughters.Less...
