Thota Tharani is South India's most sought-after Art Director & Production Designer – recipient of ‘Padma Shri’ in 2001 for his work in the field of Arts. His expertise in designing some of the most Grand, Spectacular, magnificent and larger than life sets sets in reel & real life… stands recorded. He usually works with ink and paper, but has experimented with calligraphy as a form of creative expression & infact is the expert hand behind several universally lauded handrawn –special & personalized invites. He completed his Graduate Diploma in Mural Painting in 1971 and subsequently was offered a Fellowship from the Government of France to study Print-making. Additionally, he completed print making courses from the Royal College of Arts, London and New Delhi. He was awarded ‘Padma Shri’ - the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of
India - in 2001 for his magnificent work in the field of Arts. He claim to fame with his expertise in magnificent and larger than life sets in the film titled ‘Nayagan’ (1987)– Tamil , won him his first ever ‘National Film Award for Best Art Direction’. Second was in 1996 for the movie titled ‘Indian’ – Tamil. The grandeur of the sets he created in the films added to the flavour of the films. His series of paintings featuring Gods and Goddesses and Rajputs are very famous. With his quality of work in the art of set designing, he became a most sought-after Art Director in India & abroad - foreign productions: Pondichéry, Dernier Comptoir Des Indes (French), Hanuman (French) and Branchie (Italian). He has held and participated in numerous exhibitions in India and abroad - in
Paris, Bordeaux, Vienna and in Yugoslavia and Germany. His works were shown at Kanagawa International Print Exhibition (1983); at the III & IV Mini Prints Biennale, Barcelona (1983 & 1984). He made his mark in Indian Cinema with his art of set design - across South Indian Cinema & Bollywood.
Padma Sri Thotta Tharani – RECREATED THE MADHURAI MEENAKSHI TEMPLE FOR THE MOVIE TITLED ‘ARJUN’ - constructed in 5 acre space of Padmalaya Studios near Gandipet - HYD. The set is just about 20 feet smaller than the original temple.
He has won Two National Film Awards, Two Filmfare Awards South, Four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, Two Vijay Awards & Three Andhra Pradesh State Films Awards for Best Art Director. He has worked in more than 100 feature films as a production designer, including three foreign productions: Pondichéry, Dernier Comptoir Des Indes (French), Hanuman (French) and Branchie (Italian).
